Product Overview

This custom ABS plastic housing is manufactured using insert molding to integrate brass threaded inserts into a single molded component. The part features a cylindrical base with multiple circumferential grooves, an angled upper opening, and internal mounting features.

The integrated brass inserts provide threaded connection points for subsequent assembly, while the molded ABS structure forms the housing geometry without requiring the threaded inserts to be installed in a separate post-molding operation.

The combination of an angled opening, internal cavities, and embedded inserts requires careful consideration of mold design, material flow, and insert positioning during manufacturing.

Integrated Brass Threaded Inserts

Brass threaded inserts are positioned within the mold before plastic injection, allowing the ABS material to form around the inserts. This process creates integrated metal-to-plastic connection points for subsequent fastening and assembly.

Complex Molded Housing Geometry

The housing combines a cylindrical lower section with an angled upper opening. The transition between these geometries, together with the internal cavity, requires appropriate tooling design and processing conditions.

Circumferential Grooves

Multiple grooves are molded around the cylindrical base. Their geometry and dimensional consistency are important considerations during mold development and production.

Internal Mounting Features

The housing incorporates internal openings and mounting structures that accommodate additional components according to the intended assembly design.

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is a thermoplastic commonly selected for molded housings because of its combination of impact resistance, rigidity, dimensional stability, and moldability.

For this component, insert molding integrates brass threaded inserts directly into the ABS structure. The process eliminates the need for a separate insert installation step and allows the surrounding plastic geometry to be formed during the same molding cycle.

Material grade selection, insert geometry, and molding conditions must be evaluated together to achieve the required dimensional and functional performance.

Insert Positioning and Retention

Brass inserts must be positioned accurately within the mold to maintain their intended location and alignment. Insert geometry, surrounding wall thickness, and molding conditions influence the performance of the molded connection.

Mold Design for Complex Geometry

The angled opening, internal cavity, and circumferential grooves introduce tooling considerations related to parting lines, draft angles, core design, and demolding.

Material Flow and Dimensional Stability

The ABS material must flow around the inserts and through the housing geometry without creating unacceptable molding defects. Processing conditions are evaluated to reduce risks such as incomplete filling, sink marks, warpage, and dimensional variation.

Quality Inspection

Inspection requirements can include overall dimensions, molded feature geometry, insert position, thread condition, and visible surface quality. Additional functional checks, such as insert retention testing, can be specified according to the approved drawings and project requirements.

BIE provides custom injection molding and insert molding services for OEM components requiring integrated metal inserts and complex plastic geometries.

Our manufacturing support covers drawing review, tooling development, material selection, insert integration, and production quality control. For repeat production projects, process consistency and inspection requirements are reviewed according to the component design and customer specifications.
